Uzbekistani chess grandmaster Nodirbek Abdusattorov won the main prize at the Tata Steel Chess 2026 tournament held in Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
This competition is considered one of the world's most prestigious and oldest chess tournaments. As a result of four years of consistent hard work and determination, Abdusattorov achieved a historic victory in this tournament, often called the "Wimbledon" of the chess world.
The flag of Uzbekistan was raised high once again on the international stage. For Nodirbek, this triumph was the realization of one of his major childhood dreams.
Over the past four years, he had come very close to the championship: finishing 2nd in 2023, and 3rd in both 2024 and 2025. Finally, at the 2026 tournament, he claimed the gold medal, marking his greatest achievement.
Throughout the tournament, Abdusattorov stood out with his consistent play. He scored 9 points out of 13 opportunities, with 6 wins, 6 draws, and only 1 loss.
This result led him to return to the ranks of the world's top five players in his online rating. In the final round of the tournament, he defeated the strong Indian opponent Arjun Erigaisi to secure the championship.
Another Uzbekistani chess player, Javokhir Sindarov, also distinguished himself with a high result, finishing in 2nd place. This victory once again proved the strength of Uzbekistan's chess school and its rightful place on the international stage.
Now, Nodirbek is preparing for his next major competition. From February 13 to 15, he will participate in the FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship 2026, held in Wangen, Germany.
This tournament will be held in rapid format and will feature the world's eight strongest chess players competing. The prize fund amounts to 300,000 US dollars.
Nodirbek Abdusattorov's victory serves as great inspiration and motivation for our country's chess players to achieve new heights. Do you think Nodirbek will also succeed in the February tournament and claim the main prize?
