Tochilin: Sanctions on Russian sports may be lifted

Football expert Aleksandr Tochilin recently shared his views in an interview regarding the restrictions imposed on Russian sports and the possibility of their removal. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
He commented on FIFA President Gianni Infantino's statements about lifting the ban on Russian national teams and clubs, as well as the potential removal of sanctions against Russia by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). This was reported by euro-football.ru.
Tochilin drew attention to the media reports about the IOC meeting held in Milan. According to him, a principled decision may have been made at the meeting to lift sanctions against Russian sports.
The expert evaluated this process positively and emphasized that Russia's return to international sports arenas is important for the development of sports. In his opinion, major competitions are losing their appeal without Russia.
Tochilin recalled that FIFA President Gianni Infantino described the ban on Russia as "meaningless," explaining this statement in the context of changes in the global political situation. He highlighted that there are two different approaches towards Russia and noted that over time, the illogical nature of these restrictions is becoming apparent.
According to the expert, if the IOC lifts the sanctions, it could also influence other organizations, including FIFA and UEFA. He referred to this process as a "chain reaction."
He also noted reports that FIFA might discuss Russia's return to international competitions at the congress in April. Tochilin acknowledged that even if Russia returns, some teams might refuse to play.
In such cases, each organization should operate based on its regulations and take appropriate measures against rule violations. He added that it is possible to demonstrate the futility of such actions through technical defeats.
He reminded that the principle of keeping sports free from politics should be the main motto.
