The 2026 Chess Tournament in Cyprus Was Officially Opened

The opening ceremony of the 2026 FIDE additional tournament was held with great tradition and grand celebrations in one of the beautiful cities of the island of Cyprus. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
This important event was attended with great interest by world-class chess players among men and women, tournament officials, guests, and sports fans. The ceremony program was enriched not only with official proceedings but also with musical performances painted in cultural and artificial forms, wonderful speeches, and programs reflecting the rich heritage of the people.
This event allowed it to be held in a unique and calm atmosphere. Even rainy weather could not negatively affect the mood of the participants; on the contrary, fans and chess players were in high spirits and fully enjoyed the event.
Additionally, special acquaintance meetings were organized for the chess players and guests, which served to strengthen effective communication and friendly relations among the participants. During the evening official part, representatives of governments and chess organizations from various countries participated and expressed gratitude to all staff who contributed to the successful organization of the tournament.
In particular, FIDE President Arkady Vorkovich in his speech paid special attention to the significance of this ceremony and its role in the global development of chess sport. When the chess players were called to the stage, interesting question-and-answer sessions were held with the fans.
Especially, the answers given by Matthias Blübaum and Wei Yi were applauded by the audience and created unforgettable memories for the fans. At the closing of the ceremony, Tomai Apergi's musical performance added more charm to the event and gave spiritual comfort to all participants.
Now the focus is on the main games starting on March 29, where the contenders for the next World Champion will be determined in this tournament. These matches are attracting great interest not only from the chess world but also from all sports fans and will be events that will enter history in the future.
