A new underground gas storage facility is planned to be constructed in the Koson district of Qashqadaryo region. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
According to the Ministry of Energy, this project will be implemented based on the "Qorabayir" field. Scientific research has identified twelve horizons of this field as the most suitable areas for gas storage.
Once operational, the facility will have the capacity to store 1.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas. A memorandum of cooperation has been signed between the Ministry of Energy and China's China National Petroleum Corporation to conduct preliminary research for the construction of the underground gas storage facility.
Additionally, in October 2024, the minister provided information about two existing underground gas storage facilities in the country — "Gazli" and "Xo‘jaobod". Furthermore, a working group has been established for the "So‘x" gas storage, and studies are ongoing.
This storage facility is located in Kyrgyzstan, but the compressors and other technological equipment are situated within Uzbekistan. These projects aim to increase the country's gas storage capacity and ensure stability in the energy sector (source: Ministry of Energy, Gazeta).
