In August 2024, in the city of Eskishehir, Turkey, a young man attacked elderly people with a knife and an axe. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
He targeted people sitting in a cafe, wearing a helmet while carrying out the assault. Additionally, he broadcast his actions live on social media through his mobile phone.
As a result of this attack, five individuals aged between 52 and 88 sustained various degrees of injuries. This incident caused a major uproar in the Turkish media.
The court proceedings were held behind closed doors. The prosecution charged the defendant, Arda Kyuchyukyetim, with deliberately targeting elderly people, attempted murder, and endangering people's lives.
Although initially a sentence of 108 years in prison was requested, the Eskishehir Heavy Crimes Court ultimately sentenced him to 75 years and 5 months in prison. The Turkish press emphasized a connection between the young man's actions and his inspiration from the PUBG computer game.
This case has intensified discussions about the negative impact of modern technologies and virtual games on the minds of young people. Therefore, issues concerning the awareness and safety of youth in society have become of urgent importance.
