Another tragic maritime disaster occurred near the coasts of Tunis. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
According to Valid Chtabri, a representative of the Mahdia city prosecutor's office, more than 40 African migrants died in the capsized boat. Additionally, 30 people were rescued.
Preliminary investigation results indicate that there were a total of 70 people on the boat. It was reported that among the recovered bodies were infants.
Search and rescue operations are currently ongoing. Such tragedies have been increasing along the Tunisian coasts in recent years.
In 2022, reports also emerged that four boats carrying migrants capsized near the country's coasts, resulting in at least 12 deaths and 10 people missing. At that time, there were 120 people on the boats, with 98 rescued.
The number of migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea to reach Europe is increasing annually. They mainly try to reach Europe via Libya and Tunisia.
However, hundreds of people die on these sea routes every year. The European Union ended its rescue operation off the Libyan coast in 2019.
During this operation, more than 650,000 migrants were rescued from the water. Nevertheless, the activities of smugglers and groups involved in illegal migrant transportation have not ceased.
This results in the loss of many innocent lives each year. It is necessary to strengthen international cooperation to ensure the safety of migrants and prevent illegal trafficking.
