Reno produces the first mass-produced electric vehicle in the world
French automaker Renault is giving new life to its legendary model, preparing for mass production of a modern electric vehicle named the Renault 5 Turbo 3E. This was reported by Zamin.uz.

The most significant and revolutionary aspect of this project is that it will become the first mass-produced car in the European market equipped with in-wheel motor technology. This innovative solution, developed by Protean Electric, is expected to open a completely new page in the global automotive industry.

Engineers at Protean Electric have been conducting dedicated scientific research on in-wheel motor technology for nearly seventeen years. As a result of years of work, specialists have succeeded in eliminating the most complex drawbacks of such systems.

In particular, problems such as unsprung wheel mass, water and dirt ingress into internal components, coordination with the braking system, and efficient thermal management have all been addressed. According to the plan, this new model will go on sale starting in early 2027.

Regarding technical capabilities, the new Renault 5 Turbo 3E features a rear-wheel drive system and delivers a total power output equivalent to 550 horsepower. The vehicle’s torque is impressively high, estimated at around 4800 Newton-meters.

This compact four-meter hatchback can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 3.5 seconds. Such performance indicates that the new electric vehicle can easily compete with many modern supercars.

As a result of collaboration between Protean and Alpine engineers, these motors are designed to operate reliably throughout the vehicle’s entire service life—meaning over 300,000 kilometers of driving. They are built to withstand extreme conditions such as deep potholes, strong vibrations, and even unexpected impacts.

Each wheel module has its own individual inverter, which significantly enhances the overall system’s efficiency. To address the weight issue of in-wheel motors, specialists from Lotus Engineering were also involved.

Conducted studies show that the disadvantages associated with the added wheel weight can be completely eliminated by stiffening and refining the vehicle’s suspension system. This maintains high levels of road stability and handling characteristics.

Innovative solutions have also been applied to the braking system. In the new setup, the brake disc is directly attached to the motor block, while the caliper is firmly secured to the suspension system.

Tests show that this approach does not compromise braking efficiency compared to conventional internal combustion engine vehicles. Currently, Protean holds over 320 patents, and its technologies are creating broad opportunities not only for passenger cars but also for commercial transport and autonomous vehicles.
