The gold pocket watch belonging to businessman Isidor Straus, who perished on the Titanic ship, was sold for $2.33 million at the Henry Aldridge and Son auction in England. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
According to BBC, Isidor Straus was one of the founders of the Macy’s retail chain, and he had embarked on a journey aboard the Titanic with his wife Ida.
After the ship collided with an iceberg, Straus refused to board a lifeboat and decided not to leave the ship. His wife Ida also chose to stay by her husband's side.
Instead, the steward boarded the lifeboat. The tragic loyalty of the Straus couple was also depicted in the 1997 film "Titanic" directed by James Cameron.
In the film, they are shown embracing each other faithfully as the ship sinks. According to the auction house, the watch was found along with Straus's body and personal belongings.
Later, this watch was passed down to his descendants. Ida Straus's body was never found.
This event is remembered in history as a symbol of human loyalty and tragic love.
