The High Court of Catalonia fully upheld the appeal filed by Brazilian football star Dani Alves regarding the rape case, canceling the conviction. The court also lifted all restrictions imposed on Alves. This was reported by the Reuters news agency.
According to the court's decision, it was determined that there was insufficient evidence in the case that "exceeded the standards required by the presumption of innocence." The court also emphasized that the statements of the woman, presumed to be the victim, were not credible in relation to facts that could be confirmed through video recordings. The court stated that this situation "clearly indicated" that the victim's statements were not true.
Currently, this decision may be appealed to the Supreme Court of Spain. This indicates that the case has not yet reached its final stage.
Details of the trial and arrest
In February 2024, the court sentenced Dani Alves to four and a half years in prison for raping a woman in a nightclub restroom in Barcelona in 2022. The footballer was arrested in January 2023 and has been in custody since then. However, in March 2024, one month after the court's ruling, he was released on a one million euro bail.
