According to the TN television channel, supporters of Maradona attacked one of the defendants, doctor Leopoldo Luke, in front of the courthouse in Buenos Aires. Sources say the man was struck on the head with an Argentine flag.
Luke is one of seven medical staff suspected of negligence leading to Maradona's death. Six other doctors and a nurse are also on trial.
They are accused of criminal negligence in improperly treating the patient. If the charges are confirmed, the defendants could face up to 25 years in prison.
The court process is expected to be extensive: 192 witnesses will be questioned, and medical reports, analyses, correspondence between doctors, and audio recordings will be examined. Diego Maradona died of a heart attack at his home in Tigre on November 25, 2020, at the age of 60.
