The American company OpenAI, one of the world leaders in artificial intelligence technologies, has decided to remain under the management of a non-profit organization, contrary to earlier plans. This was announced by the company's CEO Sam Altman in an official letter sent to his employees.
The letter states that OpenAI will transition from a non-profit limited liability company to a corporate governance system aimed at serving the interests of civil society. At the same time, it has been established that oversight of the company will remain fully in the hands of a non-profit governing body.
"Before making this important decision, we listened to the recommendations of civil society leaders. We also held negotiations with the offices of the attorneys general of California and Delaware. As a result, OpenAI will remain under the management of a non-profit structure. We are eagerly awaiting to develop all plans in detail during the next negotiations with Microsoft and the recently appointed members of the non-profit commission," Sam Altman wrote in his letter.
It is noted that earlier the company's leadership planned to transition OpenAI to a fully commercial management structure to retain employees and attract new investors. However, this plan was abandoned, and the company remained true to its original non-profit goals.
OpenAI has set as its main goal the use of artificial intelligence technologies for the benefit of humanity. Founded in 2015, one of the company's founders was the famous entrepreneur Elon Musk. Initially, Elon Musk and Sam Altman jointly chaired the company. At the same time, its main task was defined as conducting research in the field of artificial intelligence for the benefit of humanity.
However, in 2018, Elon Musk left OpenAI due to dissatisfaction with its commercialization, and the company fully transitioned under Sam Altman's management. The strategic partner of the company is Microsoft, which has invested heavily in OpenAI in recent years, leading the company to a leading position in the field of artificial intelligence.
The new decision of the company's leadership has been positively received by the public. Experts believe that OpenAI remaining a non-profit structure will allow it to focus more on scientific research and expand opportunities for the safe and beneficial development of artificial intelligence technologies.
Currently, OpenAI is famous worldwide with its GPT models, particularly the ChatGPT product, which has been facilitating the daily lives and work processes of millions of users.
Now, following the company's new decision, it is expected that the improvement of these technologies and their safe use for the benefit of humanity will be placed under even higher levels of oversight.
