Meta implements a personal data protection feature in smart glasses

Meta has introduced a new security feature for its smart glasses equipped with artificial intelligence technology, aiming to reduce concerns around the device. This was reported by Zamin.uz.

Now, if the light indicator showing when the device is capturing an image is covered or damaged, the glasses’ camera will automatically stop functioning. This measure is intended to protect users’ personal privacy and prevent the device from being used as a covert surveillance tool.

This was reported by influential tech publications. The company’s decision comes in response to public criticism that smart glasses are not just a modern gadget but could also raise serious privacy issues.

According to Meta representatives, no camera manufacturer in the industry has previously implemented such a strict security measure. However, some experts in the field view this step as somewhat contradictory to the company’s overall strategy, as the corporation continues to collect user data on a large scale.

In the context of fighting covert surveillance, the company has shared important information. According to it, some users have attempted to record others without their knowledge by covering the glasses’ light indicator with simple opaque tape.

Although the company later introduced technology to detect when the indicator is taped over, some individuals have tried to bypass the restriction by completely removing the light or causing a technical malfunction. The latest update was specifically developed to counter such sophisticated workarounds.

Despite this, Meta continues to encourage users to share more personal data. For example, users’ faces and videos are used to train the artificial intelligence system.

If the user does not manually disable this feature through settings, their personal content is used to improve AI models. This, in turn, has raised new questions among users.

When it comes to contradictory strategies and new initiatives, influential economic publications reported that Meta is currently testing a new prototype that captures images every few seconds and continuously records audio at the same time. This somewhat undermines the company’s statements about protecting privacy.

Although the company promises its users that “only you will see your photos,” its privacy policy states that any data collected through artificial intelligence may be used by the corporation. Currently, Meta is facing several lawsuits and investigations related to its smart glasses.

In particular, employees of an outsourcing company in Kenya have claimed they were forced to review extremely personal and disturbing footage obtained from the glasses during the process of training the AI system. This situation raises serious questions about how effectively the tech giant’s data security promises are being implemented in practice.
