The Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change of Uzbekistan and the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan are systematically developing interstate cooperation for the conservation of saiga. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
This cooperation is aimed at preserving unique saiga that are at risk of extinction. In the near future, a memorandum of understanding on the protection of saiga is planned to be signed between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.
This document will serve as a basis for implementing comprehensive programs to restore the saiga population. A number of joint activities are planned within the framework of the memorandum.
These include the establishment of protected areas along migration routes to ensure the free movement and safety of saiga, the restoration of natural pastures, water bodies, and ecosystems, and the development of a program for the reintroduction of saiga into the wild. Additionally, scientific research, monitoring, and knowledge exchange will be established.
In this context, joint expeditions, patrols, training of specialists, and data exchange on the population are planned. The main areas of cooperation include monitoring the number, health, and migration of saiga in transboundary ecosystems, restoring habitats, preventing habitat fragmentation, exchanging scientific, technical, and genetic data, implementing satellite monitoring, and veterinary control.
Combating poaching, strengthening nature conservation measures, and conducting awareness-raising activities among the population are also important tasks. At the same time, it is planned to coordinate accounting methods, create a unified database, and involve international partners in the implementation of nature conservation programs.
These measures will be of great importance in preserving saiga and restoring their natural habitat.
