On September 20, 2023, a total of 55.7 tons of waste was collected across all regions of Uzbekistan during the campaign held in connection with World Cleanup Day. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
The Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change announced this. The event was organized under the slogan "Make Room for Life," with active participation from citizens, youth, and various organizations.
A portion of the collected waste was handed over for recycling, which is an environmentally significant action. Employees of the Ministry of Ecology and the Agency for Waste Management and Circular Economy Development, environmental activists, and youth cleaned the shores of the Toyabogiz reservoir, known as the Tashkent Sea, from waste.
A total of 962 kilograms of waste was collected in this area, of which 200 kilograms were plastic containers. The plastic waste was sent for recycling.
This event served to raise the ecological awareness of the population. According to Sharifbek Hasanov, director of the agency, the waste sector contributes to climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental pollution.
On average, 19-20 thousand tons of waste are generated daily across the country. In 2024, only 5.2 percent of the 14 million tons of collected waste was recycled.
Zarrina Abdullayeva, head of the Ecology Ministry's department, stated that the aim is to change the population's attitude towards waste. She emphasized that the environment must be kept clean not just for one day, but every day.
This event is aimed at encouraging broad public ecological activity. While 36.5 tons of waste were collected in Uzbekistan on World Cleanup Day in 2023, this figure increased by 19.2 tons in 2024.
This is related to increased participation and growing attention to ecology among the population. Source: Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change.
