Discussion on the causes and solutions of propane price increase
The Competition Committee of Uzbekistan has provided official information regarding the increase in the price of liquefied gas (propane) and the situation in exchange trading. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
It is emphasized that the price increase is mainly due to the rise in the share of imported products and the strengthening of seasonal demand. Throughout 2025, a total of 358 thousand tons of propane were sold through exchange trading.
Of the gas sold, 61 percent corresponded to local producers, and 39 percent to importers. However, over the years, the share of local products has significantly decreased.
If at the beginning of the year the share of local gas was 80 percent, by January 2026 this figure had dropped to 10 percent. Since local gas is primarily directed to meet the needs of the population and social sector facilities, the volume of imported gas has increased to cover market demand.
To ensure price stability in the domestic market, the Competition Committee has introduced a number of restrictions. A 20 percent price increase limit and a purchase limit of 5 tons have been set for local gas.
As a result, the price of local products has not exceeded 7 million soums per ton. At the same time, the price of imported gas started at 8 million soums and has now risen to 9.5 million soums.
According to statistics, 11 percent of vehicles in the country run on propane, but propane accounts for only 5 percent of total fuel consumption. Nevertheless, price changes are also affecting the transport sector.
The Competition Committee warned that the spread of unfounded information on social networks could negatively impact market stability. It was emphasized that caution is necessary in disseminating information due to the possibility that incorrect data may lead to artificial price increases.
Currently, constant monitoring of prices is being conducted at fuel stations, and necessary measures are being taken to stabilize the situation. In your opinion, should the volume of imports be increased or local production expanded to reduce propane prices?
