The wife of former South Korean President Yun Sok Yol, Kim Gon Xi, has been arrested on charges of manipulating stock prices and accepting bribes. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
She denied all charges in court, but the court decided to keep her in custody due to the risk of evidence destruction during the investigation process. This case is noted as the first time in South Korean history that a former president and his wife are both in custody at the same time.
Yun Sok Yol was arrested in January on charges of attempting to declare a state of emergency in the country last year. According to prosecutors, 52-year-old Kim Gon Xi earned approximately 800 million won, or 578 thousand dollars, by artificially inflating the stock prices of Deutsch Motors' BMW cars.
Additionally, she is also suspected of receiving two Chanel bags and diamond jewelry in exchange for business favors. Kim Gon Xi is also accused of interfering in the candidate selection for the 2022 supplementary elections and last year's general elections.
Former President Yun Sok Yol rejected three legislative proposals aimed at investigating the charges against his wife during his presidency. These events are causing significant turmoil in the country's political life.
