The countries of the European Union turned out to be worse than enemies, said White House leader Donald Trump in an interview with "Newsmax".
He accused other countries of pillaging the US for 45 years due to Washington's softness and weakness. According to Trump, as a result, the country's debt reached 36 trillion dollars.
“But often friends, those who are called friends, turn out to be worse than enemies. Look at the European Union, see what they did to this country, how they cleaned it out,” said the White House leader.
He emphasized that China has followed the same path, adding that it is time to return some, if not most, of the money.
According to sources cited by "The Washington Post", starting April 2, Washington plans to impose new tariffs affecting foreign goods worth trillions of dollars.
The US has already imposed a 25 percent tariff on products imported from Mexico and Canada. Similar tariffs have been applied to products coming from China, increasing the rate to 20 percent. Washington has justified such measures as a fight against illegal immigration and fentanyl trafficking.
In addition, the United States has imposed tariffs on European Union goods. Ottawa and Beijing have already announced retaliatory measures, and the European Union is also promising to announce them in April.
