There have been sensational reports about the South Korean actor O Yeong-su (80 years old), who captured the hearts of millions with his kind yet mysterious character of Player 001 in Netflix's record-breaking series – “Squid Game”.
Is the hero now a defendant?
According to The Daily Star, O Yeong-su has been accused of sexual assault and sentenced to one year in prison. Initially, the court had given him an 8-month suspended sentence, but this decision was later reviewed and the sentence was increased.
The incident dates back to 2017...
The court revealed that the actor had sexually assaulted a fellow actress twice in 2017. It is reported that he embraced and kissed her against her will near his home.
Prosecutors assessed the situation seriously, stating that “despite his 50 years of experience, the actor had assaulted a younger colleague.” The victim reported that she has lived in constant fear since the incident.
O Yeong-su: “My 80-year reputation collapsed in an instant”
The actor denied the charges but made the following statement in court:
“Coming to court at this age is humiliating. If I have made inappropriate words or actions, I will accept the verdict. But this cannot be called violence. In an instant, my 80 years of hard work turned to ashes. I feel empty and nonexistent...”
The actor's lawyers emphasized that the accusations are based solely on the victim's words, lacking consistency and evidence.
The case is now on appeal
O Yeong-su has filed an appeal against the verdict. The final decision will be made on June 3, 2025.
Zamin.uz opinion:
A series has shaken the whole world... and now its actor stands at the door of the court with serious charges.
Who is right and who is wrong in the courts — time will tell. However, this incident reminds us of one truth: personality and reputation are built over years, but can be lost in an instant.
What do you think about this case? Is the actor right or the victim?
