A new government in Syria has prevented an attempted coup. This was announced by the country's Minister of Internal Affairs Anas Khattab, as reported by the state agency SANA.
According to the minister, the coup plan was prepared by officers connected to the former regime — namely, the government of Bashar Assad. The exact timing has not been disclosed, but it is said that this action was thwarted through the collaboration of the state armed forces and the people.
“We have eliminated the coup planned by the officers of the overthrown regime,” said Anas Khattab.
Conflict and armed clashes with Assad supporters
The political uncertainty in Syria escalated in March. Strong resistance and armed clashes occurred between the Alawites, who are supporters of Assad, and the new government forces in the provinces of Latakia, Tartus, Hama, and Homs.
As a result, more than 1,300 people have died, at least 1,000 of whom were civilians.
The government forces concluded security raids that began on March 10. The Syrian Ministry of Defense reported that “the remnants of the Assad regime, supported from abroad, have been neutralized.”
Assad's fate and negotiations with Russia
Subsequently, Syria's new president Ahmad ash-Shara’a demanded the extradition of Bashar Assad from Russia. According to reports from Al Arabiya and Al Hadath, he wants to return Assad to Syria for trial.
However, Moscow rejected this demand. Russian officials assess this issue as “not an insurmountable obstacle” in the path of restoring relations between the two countries.
