What caused the sharp decline in the import of passenger cars to Uzbekistan?
In January 2025, 1,796 passenger cars worth $31 million were imported into Uzbekistan. This was reported in the monthly report of the Customs Committee.
For comparison, during the same period last year, 10,152 passenger cars worth $221.4 million were imported. Over the past year, the value of car imports has decreased by more than 7 times, and the quantity has decreased by 5.6 times.
The largest decrease was observed in the import of hybrid cars – 31 times. The decline in the import of electric cars and gasoline passenger cars was 6.7 times and 2.5 times, respectively.
It should be noted that starting from November 1, 2024, imported cars began to undergo technical tests not in the customs area, but at the testing ground in Piskent. Additionally, an electromagnetic compatibility test was also introduced for vehicles imported by individuals or private entrepreneurs. The existing capacity of the auto testing ground being several times lower than the actual demand may be affecting the sharp decline in import volumes.
