Ivan Ayvazovsky's painting titled "The Survivors," painted in 1887, was sold at Sotheby's auction for 4.188 million pounds sterling. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
This price set a new world auction record for the artist's works. This was reported by the Artprice portal.
It is noted that the theme of the painting "The Survivors" is close to Ayvazovsky's famous work "The Ninth Wave," painted in 1850. At that time, this painting was purchased by Emperor Nicholas I for the imperial collection.
Both works depict the aftermath of a storm at sea. By the 1870s, Ayvazovsky began painting "The Survivors."
By this period, the artist had perfected his technique of depicting seascapes. During these years, he also created other famous works such as "Stormy Seas" and "Rainbow."
However, "The Survivors" is considered one of the artist's largest works not only in terms of content but also in size. In April 2004, at Sotheby's auction in New York, this piece was recognized as Ayvazovsky's largest canvas.
This painting is a brilliant example of the artist's creativity and once again confirms his significance in the world of art.
