Former Liverpool and England national team player Najjel Clough shared his thoughts on the expenses that clubs in the English championship are spending to buy new players. This was reported by Euro-football.ru.
The total spending of English Premier League clubs during the summer transfer window amounted to 3.45 billion euros. For comparison, the expenses of the third league team "Mansfield Town," currently managed by Clough, were only 11.5 million euros throughout the season.
According to Clough, many years ago people talked about millions, then about hundreds of millions, and now billions are being discussed. He emphasized that he is aware of wealthy owners and the existence of television contracts, but he said he is not sure whether this situation is beneficial or harmful for football in the long term.
He also spoke about the fact that prices are not decreasing for fans. Najjel Clough's father, Brian Clough, was the first coach in Great Britain to buy a player for one million pounds sterling.
In 1979, while managing Nottingham Forest, he signed a contract with Trevor Francis. This event remained in history as a record purchase for that time.
