Former footballer Vladimir Ponomaryov supported the initiative to tighten the limit on the number of legionnaires in the Russian Professional Football League. This was reported by Euro-football.ru.
In his opinion, the rule that no more than five foreign players should be on the field will encourage the development of local players and help advance Russian football. Ponomaryov emphasized that the abundance of legionnaires hinders young players from gaining match experience, so the new rules are considered optimal.
According to him, there should be no more than five legionnaires on the field, which creates conditions for young players to showcase their abilities. Having mostly foreign players on the field is excessive.
Earlier it was reported that in the future the limit on the number of legionnaires will be changed: the maximum number of foreign players on the roster can be ten, and no more than five can be on the field at the same time. These changes are seen as an important step aimed at developing national football.
