Recently, a UEFA delegation led by former referee Carlos Velasco Carballo visited the premises of the “Atletico” team and explained the new rule interpretations to the team. This was reported by Euro-football.ru.
During the conversation, the issue of players touching the ball twice during a penalty kick was raised. Last season, “Atletico” suffered due to this rule, as VAR technology detected Julian Alvarez touching the ball twice during the penalty shootout in the Champions League round of 16 match against “Real,” and the goal was disallowed.
The UEFA delegation showed examples of double touches to the Madrid team but did not show the specific situation involving Alvarez. “Atletico” head coach Diego Simeone faced confusion over this, as the team wanted to see the example that was most important to them.
Simeone repeatedly asked why UEFA was not showing this particular case but did not receive a clear answer from Velasco Carballo. Eventually, the coach stood up to return to his duties.
This was reported by AS. The “Atletico” team considers UEFA’s disregard of the example important to the team as disrespect and criticizes such an approach.
UEFA emphasizes the importance of transparency and openness when explaining rule interpretations.
