Iliya Gerkus, a specialist who was previously the president of Lokomotiv team, shared his views on the legionnaire limit in Russian football. This was reported by Euro-football.ru.
According to him, starting from the 2028/2029 season, the legionnaire limit will be implemented based on the "10+5" formula. That is, a team can register a maximum of 10 legionnaires for the season, and no more than 5 legionnaires can be on the field at the same time.
Gerkus evaluated this proposal positively and called the decision by the Russian Ministry of Sports reasonable. He also emphasized that he supports expanding job opportunities for Russian players.
Some clubs said that more opportunities should be given to young local players. For example, leading teams like Zenit and Spartak should field their own academy graduates more often.
At the same time, Gerkus stressed that tightening the legionnaire limit is not a decisive factor affecting the development of the Russian Premier League. In his opinion, the importance of limiting the number of legionnaires in football development has been overestimated.
Currently, clubs in the Russian Premier League can register 13 legionnaires for the season and use up to 8 legionnaires on the field at the same time. This new limit will serve to increase the competitiveness of players and help develop local football.
