Dmitriy Vasilyev, a player of Saint Petersburg's Zenit team who is currently on loan at the Sochi club, shared his thoughts about the UEFA Champions League. This was reported by Euro-football.ru.
In response to RB Sport's question about the chances of Russian clubs in the tournament, he said: "In my opinion, it would be difficult for teams like Zenit and CSKA to reach the playoffs as they did back then. I believe the prolonged absence of Russian football from international competitions has led to a decline in its level."
Additionally, the 21-year-old midfielder emphasized that he does not like the new format of European club competitions, which are now held without a group stage. This general stage system has been in effect for the second season already.
According to Vasilyev, this format may bring additional difficulties to players and teams. Overall, he holds a critical view regarding the position of Russian football on the international stage.
