A memorable event for traditional football fans – exactly seven years ago, on July 1, 2018, an exciting match took place between the national teams of Russia and Spain in the Round of 16 of the World Cup. This was reported by Euro-football.ru.
The Spanish team "La Roja" was considered the clear favorite, opening the scoring in the 12th minute with an own goal from Sergey Ignashevich. However, under the leadership of head coach Stanislav Cherchesov, the Russian team got back into the game, and Artem Dzyuba equalized from the penalty spot. Since the score remained 1:1 after the regular time and an additional 30 minutes, a penalty shootout was held to determine the winner.
In this shootout, the Russian team triumphed 4:3. The key factor in the victory was recognized as goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev's crucial save with his foot, stopping a shot from Iago Aspas. As a result, Russia eliminated Spain from the tournament and advanced to the quarter-finals.
In the quarter-finals, they missed the opportunity against Croatia through penalties. This event remains an important page in football history.
