The distribution of the OpenAI GPT-5.6 model has been delayed due to national security reasons

Artificial intelligence is undergoing a new technological leap, but this time, unexpected restrictions have emerged. This was reported by Zamin.uz.uz>
OpenAI has prepared its latest and most powerful GPT-5.6 model, but its widespread release has been temporarily delayed at the request of the U.S. government. This decision is being evaluated as having significant importance from a national security standpoint.
According to information from The Information, during a closed meeting attended by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, the GPT-5.6 model was made available only to a limited circle of users. These users are being selected individually, and the entire process is being coordinated by the Office of Science and Technology Policy and the National Cyber Director.
Such an approach signals a new phase in the relationship between technology giants and the state. In a message to employees, Sam Altman expressed hope that the full launch of the GPT-5.6 model will take place within the coming weeks.
At the same time, OpenAI stated that it does not intend to make this control regime a permanent practice. The company plans to develop a more transparent and open mechanism for releasing new models in the future, in collaboration with government agencies and industry representatives.
The seriousness of the situation is underscored by the fact that U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick personally warned Sam Altman against announcing the GPT-5.6 model to the public without prior coordination with government agencies. Such strict measures are linked to the new AI policy of the U.S. administration.
This policy aims to maintain technological leadership and prevent cyber threats. Recall that, according to an executive order signed earlier by President Donald Trump, U.S. AI developers must submit their latest models to the government at least several days before public release.
This rule is expected to significantly affect the operational practices of leading companies such as OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft. During this period, the government will have the opportunity to review the model’s safety parameters.
Experts believe that such oversight measures could lead to two possible outcomes. On one hand, they may enhance security; on the other, they could slow down the pace of innovation and limit users’ access to the most advanced tools.
For users in Uzbekistan, this news is also significant, as global restrictions may delay the arrival of new ChatGPT features in our region. Currently, an official statement from OpenAI regarding the official launch of the GPT-5.6 model is awaited.
