Uzbekistan's Minister of Transport Ilhom Mahkamov stated in an interview with the "Uzbekistan 24" TV channel that Tashkent is considering the possibility of purchasing ferries from Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
According to him, shipbuilding plants operate in these countries, and the purchased ferries will be used for cargo transportation across the Caspian Sea. Last autumn, the Vesti.az portal reported that Tashkent and Baku intend to establish ferry production.
Up to 150 million dollars are planned to be allocated for this purpose. In July 2025, Ilhom Mahkamov emphasized that partners from Turkey might also be involved in the project.
According to the Center for Transport Development Issues under the Ministry of Transport, this project will serve to increase the cargo transportation capacity of Uzbekistan's fleet. Source: Kursiv.media.
