Recently, various reports have circulated on social media about an increase in cases of poisoning following watermelon consumption in Tashkent city. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
These news caused great concern among the public. In response, the Tashkent City Sanitary and Epidemiological Control Department issued an official statement.
According to experts, no mass cases of watermelon poisoning have been recorded in infectious disease hospitals in the city. In other words, the information spreading on social media is unfounded and does not correspond to the truth.
Furthermore, the department strongly advised the public not to purchase roadside melons and other produce that do not meet sanitary requirements. It was especially emphasized that watermelons and other melon products should only be bought from official and reliable points of sale.
One of the incidents that sparked widespread public discussion recently was the death of a 4-year-old child in Tashkent on August 16. After the family members consumed watermelon at home, three children developed symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, and fever.
They were taken to the hospital, but despite intensive care, the young child passed away. Doctors diagnosed the child with acute infectious intestinal disease, gastroenterocolitis, and aspiration syndrome.
Preliminary conclusions from the Republican Forensic Medical Examination indicated that the probable cause of death was diarrhea and gastroenteritis associated with pulmonary-cardiac failure and intestinal infection. Currently, law enforcement agencies are conducting an investigation into this case.
Experts remind that it is necessary to exercise increased caution when consuming food products during hot summer days. Following sanitary rules and choosing quality, inspected products are the most important factors for a healthy life.
