The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has listed 48,646 new species at risk of extinction in the updated Red List. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
At the same time, the total number of endangered species has reached 172,620. Experts emphasize that due to climate change, melting sea ice, and deforestation, many animals, especially Arctic seals and half of the world's bird species, are at risk of extinction.
Sea ice is very important for seals to care for their offspring, and the reduction of this ice also poses a threat to polar bears. According to recent data, 61 percent of the world's bird population has declined, compared to 44 percent in 2016.
The main causes are habitat destruction and deforestation. Nevertheless, as a result of conservation programs for green sea turtles, their numbers have increased by 28 percent over the past decade.
