The striped hyena is considered a very rare animal in Uzbekistan. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
In fact, these various hyenas are usually found in African savannas, but they also live in the territory of Uzbekistan. According to experts, currently the total number of striped hyenas in the entire country does not exceed 30–40 individuals.
They are mainly found in the mountainous areas of Surxondaryo region. Recently, within the framework of the 20th meeting of CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora), an event titled "Striped Hyena Under Threat" was held.
This event was organized in cooperation between Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. It discussed the important role of the striped hyena in the global ecosystem, particularly its "sanitary" function.
It was also emphasized that this animal is still not adequately protected. During the event, the necessity to strengthen international cooperation was noted.
In particular, it was discussed that it is necessary to determine the transboundary status of the striped hyena, reconsider its status on the IUCN Red List, and include funding issues in protection strategies. The organizers stressed the need to stop the misconception of this species as an "incomprehensible predator" and to recognize it as an important partner for ecosystems.
The striped hyena does not pose a threat to people, but sometimes it is killed by shepherds because it attacks livestock. Experts propose introducing a compensation system for livestock owners to prevent such incidents.
Due to the extreme caution of this animal, it has almost never been captured on camera traps. Its presence has only been recorded through videos taken by shepherds.
This demonstrates how rare and cautious the striped hyena is.
