The national dish “Sofi osh,” specific to the Bukhara region, has been officially registered as a geographical indication in the state registry. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
This decision allows not only the name of the dish but also its traditional preparation method, developed over centuries, to be legally protected. The registration of “Sofi osh” as a geographical indication guarantees its authentic quality and distinguishes it from similar dishes prepared in other regions.
This is of great importance for promoting the national dish internationally and preserving Bukhara’s rich gastronomic heritage. According to experts, the status of a geographical indication creates new opportunities for local chefs, restaurants, and the tourism sector.
From now on, “Sofi osh” will be legally protected solely as a national dish unique to Bukhara. For reference, a geographical indication is an intellectual property object that confirms a product’s belonging to a specific region and that its quality is connected to the natural, cultural, or human factors of that region.
Such decisions play a crucial role in preserving national treasures and introducing them to the world.
