Samarkand district is abolished, and the city territory is expanded

At the meeting of the Uzbekistan Liberal Democratic Party faction in the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis, a decision was approved to change the administrative boundaries of the Samarkand region. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
According to this decision, the Samarkand district will be abolished as a separate administrative unit, and its territory will be merged into the city of Samarkand. As a result, the city's population will increase from 604 thousand to 882 thousand people.
In addition, the construction of residential and non-residential buildings based on modern architectural solutions is planned. These changes aim to fully meet the housing needs of the population.
According to faction member Diyor Husanov, these administrative changes will expand the territory of Samarkand city from 11.8 thousand hectares to 28.9 thousand hectares. This will create great opportunities for implementing new investment and construction projects.
Tourist facilities, sports grounds, aquaparks, recreational parks, and other entertainment venues are planned to be established within the city area. New green zones, service centers, and logistics infrastructure will also be organized.
The idea of turning Samarkand into a "million-city" was planned in 2021. President Shavkat Mirziyoyev announced these large-scale administrative-territorial changes during his visit to the region in November 2025.
These reforms will not only contribute to the development of the city's population and infrastructure but also enhance tourism potential and improve the investment climate.
