For the first time, an artificial leg was installed on a camel named Kemmi at an animal shelter located in Sindh province, Pakistan. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
This event was significant as the first instance of a prosthetic being installed on a large animal in the country's history. In June 2024, Kemmi's leg was cruelly amputated by a local landowner.
The reason for this was the camel's intrusion into the landowner's field, resulting in a brutal injury. This incident spread widely on social media, causing strong public outrage.
Officials took control of the situation and brought the camel to the CDRS shelter in Karachi. Experts noted that the camel was in psychological shock, especially fearful of men.
The shelter director, Shima Khan, recalls Kemmi crying and making heart-wrenching sounds. The rehabilitation process was complex.
Kemmi was introduced to another camel named Kelly, and they spent time together. This helped her attempt to stand on her three legs, and her condition improved significantly.
After the initial treatment, a special prosthetic was ordered for Kemmi from the USA. Once the artificial leg was installed, the camel took her first steps.
Veterinarian Babar Husayn stated that Kemmi has not fully adjusted yet, but she is gradually getting used to the prosthetic through daily 15-20 minute sessions. The complete adjustment process is expected to take about 2-3 weeks.
This first operation in Pakistan has become an important step in the field of veterinary medicine and animal protection in the country. Kemmi is currently living in the shelter in Karachi, receiving ongoing medical, social, and rehabilitation support.
Experts emphasize that this case will serve as a foundation for positive outcomes in the fight against violence towards animals and in helping disabled animals.
