A medical worker who worked at a hospital in western Germany is accused of killing 9 patients and attempting to kill another 34, according to Bild, citing local prosecutors.
The man was an employee at a clinic in the city of Viersen. In 2024, the hospital management noticed suspicious activities in his work and reported it to the police.
The employee was arrested in July 2024 and charged with 11 counts of attempted murder. To determine the number of victims and affected individuals, law enforcement agencies exhumed several bodies.
In February, prosecutors stated that the employee had killed 5 people and attempted to kill another 25 patients. Subsequently, four more counts of murder and nine counts of attempted murder were added to the case.
The employee worked in the palliative care department, where he assisted in alleviating symptoms for critically or severely ill patients. According to investigation data, the man deliberately overdosed patients with painkillers or sedatives. Thus, it is emphasized that the medical worker attempted to pass the night shift 'quietly' without any incidents.
The Aachen prosecutor's office has announced charges against the 44-year-old man.
It is noted that among the victims of the suspect were patients who were supposed to be cared for by the hospital. Some of the affected individuals faced serious consequences due to excessive doses of sedative medications. It is reported that investigative actions are ongoing.
