It is reported that Ukraine has launched a new attack on the Belgorod region.

Since Tuesday, military sources in Russia have been reporting that the Ukrainian armed forces are launching an attack on Belgorod region through land. According to their information, Ukrainian units are attempting to break through the Russian border defense in the Krasnoyarujskiy district in the northwest of the region, at the point where it borders Kursk region.

Ukrainian forces recently retreated from a large part of the Sudja district in Kursk region, which has been held since August 2024, but they continue to hold border sections of Russian territory near the village of Gogolevka and the Oleshnya checkpoint along the R200 Sumi-Yunakovka-Sudja road, near the village of Guyevo.

In turn, the Russian army has occupied a small part of Ukrainian territory near the village of Novenkoye, west of the R200 highway. The Russian army is attacking in all these areas, and fighting continues in these regions.

New Ukrainian attacks are being observed approximately 25-30 km southeast of the small foothold remaining in Kursk region (in the Guyevo area), as reported by Russian military channels.

This could be a diversionary strike or part of a broader strategy by the Ukrainian armed forces aimed at dispersing Russia's "Sever" group forces. Overall, such attacks are characteristic of the current military campaign.

After the units were withdrawn from the Sudja area, reserves became available to the command of the Ukrainian armed forces, while the command of the Russian group in Kursk region is still focused on the main task – liberating the entire territory of Russia.

On March 18, the Russian Ministry of Defense officially announced that at 5:50 AM, Ukraine attempted to "break in" towards the settlements of Demidovka and Prilese in the western Belgorod region to create a "negative backdrop" around the phone conversation between the presidents of the USA and Russia and to discredit Donald Trump's "peace initiatives".

According to Russian military sources, on Tuesday, the Ukrainian armed forces made five attempts to attack in the direction of Belgorod region, the last one occurring between 5:30 PM and 6:45 PM. All attacks were repelled, stated the Russian Ministry of Defense.

According to the ministry's statement, up to 200 Ukrainian servicemen and 29 military vehicles, including five tanks, 16 armored combat vehicles, and three engineering obstacle-clearing machines were involved in the attacks in the Belgorod direction.

Ukraine has not officially commented on the Russian side's statements on this matter.

"Someone came out, it seemed like someone was running away from someone, while someone else came out and entered from another corner. These are our strategic steps, our goals are completely understandable," said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky a day ago.

Russian militarized telegram channels also claimed on Wednesday morning, following the Russian Ministry of Defense's statement, that all attacks by the Ukrainian army in the western Belgorod region had been repelled, but it was acknowledged in reports that the situation remains complex and that Ukrainian armed forces are bringing in reserves and preparing for new strikes.

On March 18, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov also briefly mentioned the complex situation in the Krasnoyarujskiy district of Belgorod region.

On Tuesday, he wrote on his telegram channel: "I returned from the Krasnoyarujskiy district. Today a headquarters meeting was held there. We are ensuring the safety of our population. We will continue house-to-house visits and talk to people. Yes, we are warning in advance, we need to do this so that people can temporarily leave their homes and be safe."

"Experience shows that when the situation sharply worsens and people are already caught under a heavy rain of bullets, we can do nothing," added Gladkov.

Later, he announced on Wednesday that access to the Krasnoyarujskiy district is closed, and that traffic safety department employees will be on duty on all roads "to prevent the population from entering (crossing)". "If you do not comply with this decision, you may perish," warned the governor.

Last week, Russian forces managed to capture the city of Sudja in Kursk region, which has been under the control of the Ukrainian armed forces since August of last year.

The Rybar telegram channel, which is close to the Russian Ministry of Defense, reported on March 20 that heavy fighting is ongoing in this border area, the enemy has fortified in the forests, and they are not retreating from their goal of capturing the district center of Krasnaya Yar.
