Global negotiations against plastic pollution initiated by the United Nations have once again ended without results. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
During the three years of meetings, countries failed to reach important decisions. The latest session held in Geneva also did not yield the expected outcome.
Countries are divided into two main groups. The European Union and about a hundred other countries support reducing plastic production.
On the other hand, oil-producing countries believe the issue should be resolved only through collecting and recycling plastic waste. According to scientists, recycling alone is not enough, as currently only ten percent of plastic worldwide is recycled.
At the same time, the volume of plastic production continues to increase. For example, production volume was 2 million tons in 1950 and reached 475 million tons in 2022.
Large companies are also joining this debate. Manufacturers like Nestle and Unilever support reducing plastic and propose introducing uniform standards and special fees.
These funds could be directed towards recycling projects. Environmental activists accuse oil-producing countries of prioritizing profit over nature.
A Greenpeace representative called this process a warning signal for our planet. The next stages of the negotiations are planned to continue in the near future.
International cooperation and strict measures are considered necessary in the fight against plastic pollution.
