As of September 1, 2025, the number of people aged over one hundred in the country reached 99,763. This figure was announced by NHK television channel based on data from the Ministry of Health.
Compared to 2024, the number of elderly people increased by 4,644, indicating continuous growth over the past 55 years. Among the long-lived, women significantly outnumber men, accounting for 87,784 of those over one hundred, approximately 88 percent.
The oldest person recorded is 114-year-old Shigeko Kagawa, who resides in Yamatokoriyama city, Nara Prefecture.
The oldest man is 111-year-old Mizuno Kiyoshi, living in Shizuoka Prefecture. According to statistics, the prefectures with the highest populations of people over one hundred include Shimane, Kochi, and Tottori.
The Japanese population's interest in the secrets of longevity is increasing. According to the Ministry of Health, the average life expectancy of Japanese women is 87.13 years.
Through this indicator, they have renewed the world record 40 times. For men, the average life expectancy is 81.09 years, remaining unchanged since 2023.
