Apple warns users of state-sponsored hacking attacks

Apple has issued a new round of security warnings to users in over 150 countries, alerting them to potential state-sponsored spyware attacks targeting their iPhones, iPads, and Macs. The company says these notifications are part of its ongoing effort to protect users from highly sophisticated digital threats.

Unlike typical cybercrime, state-sponsored spyware is designed to infiltrate the devices of specific individuals—such as journalists, activists, or government officials—and extract sensitive information over time. Apple emphasizes that receiving such a warning does not necessarily mean a device has already been compromised, but it does indicate a credible risk that requires immediate action.

The updated alert system now delivers notifications directly on the user’s locked screen, in addition to email and account login alerts, ensuring the message is seen. The notice advises users that Apple has detected signs of a mercenary spyware attack and urges them to take protective steps.

Security experts recommend that anyone who receives such an alert should not ignore it. Even if the device appears to be functioning normally, users should activate Lockdown Mode—a special protection feature designed to severely limit the capabilities of spyware.

Apple says that, to date, no device with Lockdown Mode enabled has been successfully compromised by such attacks. The company also provides guidance on how to seek further help, including contacting Apple Support or accessing resources through its dedicated security support page.

These alerts have been sent to users in more than 150 countries since 2021, highlighting the global scale of the threat. By improving transparency and accessibility of its warnings, Apple aims to empower users to respond quickly and effectively to potential intrusions.
