Morris Hastings, who was wrongfully imprisoned for 38 years in the United States, has been awarded 25 million dollars in compensation by the government. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
This amount is the largest compensation in the country's history. Hastings was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1983, accused of raping and murdering Roberta Widermayer.
However, in 2021, the case was reviewed, and DNA analysis proved his innocence. The investigation identified Kenneth Pacnet, who was arrested in 1983 for a similar crime and died in prison in 2020, as the real perpetrator.
In an interview with journalists after his release, Hastings said that 38 years of his life were stolen and emphasized that no amount of money could return that time. Nevertheless, this compensation marks the end of a long and painful journey.
This case highlights errors in the justice system and serves as a reminder of the necessity to protect human rights. The compensation provided by the government is an important step towards partially redressing the damages caused to Morris Hastings' life.
