Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan made an open statement about the Second Karabakh War that took place in 2020. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
In his statement, he emphasized that if at that time the Armenian government had recognized Karabakh as a territory belonging to Azerbaijan, there was a possibility of preventing the war. According to Pashinyan, there was an opportunity to make such a decision in 2018–2019, but it was not implemented.
He assessed his decision at that time as a mistake, but also noted that making such a decision was very difficult back then. Because such a decision could have caused significant dissatisfaction and resistance within the country.
Pashinyan's statement sparked various debates in Armenian society. Some accepted his words as honesty and acknowledgment of a mistake, while others considered these views contrary to national interests.
During the 44-day Karabakh war in 2020, Azerbaijan regained several territories it had previously lost and restored control over the mountainous regions. This conflict affected not only regional but also international political relations.
According to experts, Pashinyan's statement aligns with Armenia's new foreign policy direction. He stated that learning from history and preventing new conflicts is one of Armenia's main tasks today.
At the same time, Armenian society continues to perceive the Karabakh issue as an unresolved national tragedy.
