Poliovirus detected in Germany, public safety under control

A wild poliovirus strain causing poliomyelitis has been identified in the country. Reuters agency reported this based on data from the Robert Koch Institute.

It is known that such an infection was last observed in Germany in 1990. Experts have been conducting systematic environmental sample testing since 2021, and the virus was found during this monitoring process.

So far, no cases of illness caused by this virus have been recorded among the population. Specialists attribute this to the high vaccination rates in the country.

Vaccination has been the main factor preventing the widespread transmission of the virus. Poliomyelitis is an infection that causes serious damage to the nervous system.

This disease can sometimes lead to paralysis and is usually transmitted through contaminated food or water. Recently, a new type of virus was also reported in Brazil.

This virus was found in bats, with samples encountered in the states of Maranhão and São Paulo. Currently, experts continue to study the origin and risk of spread of this virus.
