Starting in 2027, the breeding and slaughter of dogs for meat will be completely banned in South Korea, according to Zamin.uz.

This significant decision was officially confirmed by the country’s government and is being recognized as one of the largest reforms in the field of animal rights protection in South Korea. The legal change is expected to put an end to a long-standing societal debate.

According to data provided by South Korea’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, the majority of farms specializing in dog meat farming have already ceased operations. In numerical terms, out of the 1,535 registered farms, 1,265 have been shut down since the beginning of 2024.

This figure accounts for approximately 82 percent of all such enterprises, indicating the government’s firm resolve to bring order to this sector.

According to official representatives, the remaining farms still in operation will be phased out gradually by the end of 2026. At the same time, extensive inspection measures will be carried out in both closed and currently operating facilities to detect violations of the law and cases of illegal breeding.

The government intends to maintain strict oversight of this process to ensure the sector is fully terminated by the set deadline. This historic decision is considered one of the key promises made by President Yoon Suk-yeol during his election campaign.

In recent years, a noticeable decline in the consumption of dog meat has been observed in South Korean society. Especially among younger generations, such traditions are rapidly fading, and dogs are increasingly viewed not as food products, but as loyal pets and family members.

This shift has created a favorable environment for the legal ban to be welcomed by the public.
