Thousands of people protested against rising housing prices in Madrid

The Spanish capital, Madrid, has recently become a center of large-scale social unrest. Zamin.uz reported on this.
Thousands of local residents, frustrated by the excessive increase in rental prices, occupied the city's streets and squares. Peaceful citizens are firmly demanding that the government curb prices and implement drastic reforms in this sector.
According to various sources, between twenty-three thousand and one hundred thousand people participated in this mass demonstration organized by the local tenants' association. This protest movement was held under the vital slogan, "Housing is costing us too much, let's lower the prices."
The protesters' demands are very clear: they want the return of the previous system of indefinite lease agreements, a significant reduction in monthly rental payments, and an increase in the country's minimum wage and benefit amounts to one thousand five hundred euros. According to statistical data provided by the organizers, housing rentals in Madrid have increased by more than fifty percent over the last five years.
As a result, the average monthly rent for an apartment in the city has now exceeded one thousand five hundred euros. Representatives of the tenants' union emphasize that some families are forced to spend more than seventy percent of their total income solely on their place of residence.
The protesting party notes that real estate owners, large investment funds, and current government policy are responsible for this dire situation. This large demonstration in Madrid may be just the beginning.
According to reports, similar actions are planned to be continued in twenty-four other major cities in Spain in the near future. Representatives of the tenants' association strongly criticize the current system in the country and call on citizens to protect their rights.
The Spanish government states that the main cause of this problem is the excessive flow of tourists coming to the country. As a result of the popularity of short-term tourist rental services, there is a shortage of affordable long-term housing for the local population.
To ease the situation, a proposal was put forward in Barcelona to gradually ban tourist apartments by the year twenty twenty-nine. The leadership of Madrid also plans to take measures to drastically reduce the number of such homes intended for tourists.
