The US government has filed a lawsuit against FIFA over ticket sales

The government of the United States of America has launched a large-scale investigation into the sale of tickets for the 2026 World Cup by the International Football Federation (FIFA). This was reported by Zamin.uz.
According to information from influential publications, the investigation is primarily focused on eight matches scheduled to take place at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, including the tournament's final, in relation to ticket sales. This has caused significant controversy in the sports world and among the public.
Attorneys General Letitia James of New York and Jennifer Devenport of New Jersey have demanded that the international organization provide all documents regarding ticket pricing, sales stages, and seat categories. They have also sent official summons to verify the accuracy of information provided to consumers.
The involvement of specialists from the New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection in this investigation underscores the seriousness of the matter. FIFA has previously faced numerous objections for unjustifiably inflating ticket prices.
Changes in the stadium seating map across various sales stages have caused confusion and dissatisfaction among buyers. Some customers have complained that the seats they originally selected were later reassigned to different categories.
Moreover, the unexpected introduction of new price tiers in April for front-row seats in the lower sections of the stands has further exacerbated the situation. New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Devenport accused the organization of artificially creating scarcity and inflating prices beyond reasonable limits.
She emphasized that ticket sales for major events like the World Cup must be fair and transparent. In her view, FIFA is operating the process to the detriment of ordinary fans, turning it into speculation.
New York Attorney General Letitia James added that every buyer has the right to know exactly what they are paying for and which seat category they are purchasing. In response to these allegations, FIFA stated that stadium maps are provided only for general orientation and do not fully reflect the exact location of seats.
However, this explanation has not satisfied consumers or law enforcement agencies. Experts believe that FIFA may attempt to challenge the demands of U.S. authorities in court.
As a result, the investigation could continue for an extended period and may not be resolved before the tournament begins. If so, these controversies surrounding ticket sales ahead of the World Cup could negatively affect the event's reputation.
