Reasons for removing physical buttons in Mazda cars explained

Mazda explained that in its new generation of cars, physical buttons on the center console were removed and all functions were moved to a large touchscreen, as reported by Zamin.uz.
Company representatives emphasized that this decision was made primarily to improve driver safety. The new Mazda CX-5 crossover features a 15.6-inch central screen, where nearly all traditional buttons have been eliminated.
While many assume this move is aimed at cutting costs, Mazda engineers say otherwise. Project leader Koichiro Yamaguchi stated that the change was chosen to reduce driver distraction from the road.
If physical buttons for climate control and other systems remained, they would be placed lower down, forcing the driver to look away from the road. Moreover, finding the right button among similar ones could be difficult.
On the touchscreen, however, controls are positioned closer to eye level, significantly reducing the time the eyes need to shift focus. Mazda engineers have placed the most frequently used functions—especially climate control—at the bottom of the screen, where they remain constantly visible.
Nevertheless, this decision has sparked debate among car enthusiasts. Many drivers are accustomed to physical buttons and can operate them without looking.
The Mazda CX-6e and Mazda 6e electric models also feature this minimalist interior. These models were primarily developed for the Chinese market, where large screens and digital technology are highly valued.
Considering Mazda’s strong presence in the Uzbek market, it is expected that the company’s global models will continue to evolve in this direction. However, Koichiro Yamaguchi noted that physical buttons will not disappear completely.
The company continuously studies customer feedback. If dissatisfaction with touchscreen controls grows, physical buttons may return in future models.
For now, the brand considers modern minimalism and digital convenience its main advantage.
