On March 15, it was reported by the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection, and Climate Change that over 1000 birds and desert tortoises were prevented from being sold illegally at the bird market in the Olmazor district of Tashkent.
It was noted that a joint monitoring operation was conducted by the Tashkent city prosecutor's office, the Interior Ministry, the National Guard, and the Ecology Department to investigate cases of illegal sale of wild birds and animals caught from nature.
During the operation, 1168 individuals were identified, including 935 belonging to the family of sparrows, 33 to the family of finches, 200 to the family of thrushes, and 3 to the family of gulls, as well as 35 desert tortoises being sold illegally.
The birds were confiscated from the vendors at the market as evidence and released into a suitable environment for them to live.
The desert tortoises were temporarily sent to the Tashkent Zoo, while the 3 birds belonging to the family of gulls were temporarily handed over to the Society for the Protection of Wild Birds.
They will be released back into nature after medical supervision and care, the report states.
