On the eve of Independence Day, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev participated in memorial events held at the "Memory of the Martyrs" memorial complex. This was reported by Upl.uz.
In his speech, he emphasized the necessity of accepting the courage of our ancestors who sacrificed their lives for the independence of our country as a permanent example for future generations. During the event, the head of state paid special attention to the difficult pages in our history.
He recalled that during the period of repression, more than one hundred thousand of our compatriots were subjected to illegal persecution. Thousands of people were executed on baseless charges, and many others were exiled.
This dealt a severe blow to the intellectual and cultural potential of our nation. In recent years, extensive work has been carried out in Uzbekistan to restore historical justice.
According to the President, during this period, more than 1,200 citizens who were unjustly sentenced have been rehabilitated. The Museum of Victims of Repression in Tashkent has been renovated, and similar institutions are being established in other regions of the republic.
These efforts are being carried out with the aim of conveying the harsh history to future generations. The head of state also paid special attention to the legacy of the Jadids in his speech.
The 150th anniversary of the Jadids, who were progressive thinkers at the beginning of the 20th century, is being widely celebrated. On this occasion, a museum dedicated to the Jadid legacy is being established in Bukhara.
This museum is aimed at immortalizing their contribution to the development of the national idea. Shavkat Mirziyoyev also recalled the tradition of the week of remembrance for victims of political repression, introduced last year.
This week is held annually during the first week of October. This year, it is being organized in the form of a "week of memory and education."
The President emphasized the necessity of conducting this week meaningfully, reaching a wide audience through special lessons in schools and higher education institutions, television programs, and competitions among youth. He also noted the importance of studying the lives of great enlighteners.
He cited the fate of Turkestan students who studied in Germany in the 1920s as an example. After returning to their homeland, they were subjected to repression.
According to Mirziyoyev, their unrealized potential could have fundamentally transformed our society and accelerated development. At the end of the memorial event, prayers were offered for the peace and prosperity of Uzbekistan.
Later, the President visited the "New Uzbekistan" park and laid a wreath at the Independence monument. Deputies of the Oliy Majlis, government members, and representatives of the capital's community participated in this official ceremony.
The "Memory of the Martyrs" memorial complex was established at the site where victims of repression in the 1930s, including prominent Uzbek intellectuals and writers Abdulla Qodiriy and Cho‘lpon, were executed. This complex serves as a reminder of the difficult pages in the nation's history.
