Yuriy Zavarzin, who previously served as the general director of Moscow's "Spartak" club, expressed his thoughts on the tightening restrictions on the number of foreign players in the Russian football championship. This was reported by Euro-football.ru.
According to information circulated today, the number of foreign players that clubs can register for a season will be reduced from 13 to 10. Additionally, each team will be allowed to have 5 foreign players on the field at the same time instead of 8.
Yuriy Zavarzin commented on this: “Having 5 foreign players on the field does not make a significant difference compared to the previous 8, but we need to move in this direction. We need high-level foreign players who have also played enough games in national teams.” For reference, there were no restrictions on foreign players in the top league of Russian football from 1997 to 2005.
The current limit on foreign players was introduced in 2022.
